Looking for inspiration on the power of local government in passenger rail advocacy? Then join Rail Passengers on Wednesday, February 23rd at 3pm eastern as we talk with Dave Strohmaier, Chairman of Montana’s Big Sky Passenger Rail Authority about how the Authority came into existence and the opportunities for local governments to catalyze regional and national change.
Established during the height of the pandemic in November 2020, the Big Sky Passenger Rail Authority became the first regional passenger rail authority in Montana, and was entirely the result of county governments coming together around the shared vision of restoring the North Coast Hiawatha, which was discontinued by Amtrak in 1979. In the past year and a half, they’ve arguably accomplished more toward this goal than in the previous 42 years combined.
In partnership with Big Sky, the Rail Passengers Association recently completed a research note, “North Coast Hiawatha Restoration: A Solid Return for Taxpayers and Business,” which Rail Passengers President & CEO Jim Mathews will join to summarize.

"On behalf of Amtrak’s onboard service staff, I want to thank the Rail Passengers Association for honoring their hard work with this award. The past couple years have indeed been difficult for Amtrak onboard service staff – coping with furloughs and job insecurity, adapting to changing protocols and services, not to mention the unfortunate events such as a tragic derailment and a fatal shooting. Nevertheless, our dedicated members at Amtrak have handled these hurdles with the care, attention and diligence for which they’re known. We thank Rail Passengers for their acknowledgement of our members’ hard work and, as always, look forward to seeing you on the rails."
